Inclusion and SEND at Hellingly Preschool
At Hellingly Preschool, we are proud to be an inclusive setting where every child is valued, respected, and supported to reach their full potential. We welcome children of all abilities and celebrate the individuality and diversity that each child brings to our preschool.
Our Commitment
-
Every child has the right to access a high-quality early education.
-
We support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) through an inclusive approach that removes barriers to learning.
-
Our team works closely with parents, carers, and professionals to ensure each child’s needs are fully understood and met.
-
We follow the SEND Code of Practice (2015) and Working Together to Safeguard Children guidance.
Our staff are experienced in supporting a wide range of needs, including autism, ADHD, speech and language delay, anxiety, medical conditions and non-verbal communication.
Early Identification and Support
We recognise that early identification and intervention are vital to helping children succeed.
We identify and assess needs through:
-
Regular observations and assessments by key workers
-
Close communication with parents and carers
-
Information shared by health visitors and other professionals
-
Transition records from previous settings
When additional support is needed, we work together to create a Setting-Based Support Plan or Individual Education Plan (IEP), which is reviewed regularly with families and professionals.
Our SENDCo
Our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) is Sara Sherrard (Manager).
She leads on all aspects of SEND, coordinates individual support plans, oversees staff training, and works closely with parents and outside agencies.
Inclusive Practice and Environment
-
All children are fully included in daily routines, activities, and learning opportunities.
-
The environment is adapted when necessary to meet individual needs.
-
Visual supports such as now-and-next boards, timelines, and musical transitions help children understand routines and feel secure.
-
Achievements are celebrated according to each child’s individual progress, not just developmental milestones.
Working in Partnership with Parents
We believe that parents and carers are our most important partners. We aim to:
-
Build trusting relationships where families feel listened to and supported
-
Offer regular opportunities to discuss progress and next steps
-
Share all written reviews and plans openly
-
Support parents to be fully involved in their child’s learning and transitions
Transitions and Next Steps
We ensure smooth transitions when a child moves to school or another setting by:
-
Sharing records and support plans with the new setting
-
Liaising directly with new staff and professionals
-
Supporting children through visits and transition activities
Training and Continuous Development
All staff receive ongoing training in SEND and inclusive practice.
The SENDCo ensures that the team remains up to date with current guidance, reflecting our commitment to continuous improvement and best practice.
Monitoring and Review
Our inclusion and SEND provision is regularly reviewed to ensure it remains effective and responsive to the needs of every child.
The Inclusion Policy is updated routinely as part of our quality assurance process and commitment to outstanding early years practice.
