Personalised Learning Environments
At Hellingly Preschool, we recognise that every child is unique. Our learning environments are carefully planned to reflect children’s individual interests, developmental stages and needs. Practitioners use observations and ongoing assessment to shape experiences that support each child’s progress and well being.
We create inclusive spaces that are accessible to all children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. Reasonable adjustments are made to ensure every child can participate fully and feel confident within the setting. Our environments are calm, welcoming and flexible, supporting emotional security, independence and positive learning behaviours.
Children are encouraged to make choices, lead their own learning and develop confidence as capable, independent learners.
Creativity and Curiosity through Play
Play is at the heart of learning at Hellingly Preschool. Through child led and adult supported play, children are encouraged to explore, investigate and experiment in ways that are meaningful to them.
Open ended resources and thoughtfully planned activities promote creativity, problem solving and imagination. Practitioners support learning through shared thinking, questioning and modelling, helping children to deepen their understanding and extend their ideas.
By following children’s interests and providing rich play opportunities, we nurture curiosity, confidence and a love of learning.
Nature Infused Learning
We value the importance of learning in and through nature. Children are given regular opportunities to explore the outdoor environment, developing an understanding of the natural world through hands on experiences.
Nature based learning supports children’s curiosity, well being and physical development. Activities such as outdoor exploration, seasonal changes, planting and observing wildlife help children to develop respect for the environment and an appreciation of the world around them.
Outdoor learning also supports emotional regulation, resilience and collaborative play, allowing children to learn in a calm and engaging environment.
Physical Development and Risky Play
Physical development is a key part of our curriculum. We provide daily opportunities for children to develop strength, coordination, balance and control through both indoor and outdoor play.
Children are encouraged to take part in age appropriate risky play, such as climbing, balancing and exploring physical challenges in a safe and supportive way. This helps children to develop confidence, resilience, problem solving skills and an awareness of their own capabilities.
Staff closely supervise and support children to assess risk, make choices and build independence, ensuring safety while allowing children to challenge themselves appropriately.
Environmental Sustainability
At Hellingly Preschool, we promote an early understanding of environmental responsibility and sustainability. Children are encouraged to care for their environment through simple, meaningful experiences such as recycling, caring for plants and using resources thoughtfully.
Learning opportunities help children to understand the importance of looking after the world around them. By modelling sustainable practices and discussing environmental choices, we support children to develop respect, responsibility and awareness from an early age.
These experiences help children to become thoughtful, responsible individuals who value their environment.
Storytelling
Storytelling is central to our approach to communication, language and emotional development. Through stories, songs, rhymes and role play, children develop listening skills, vocabulary and a love of books.
Practitioners use storytelling to support imagination, understanding of emotions and social situations, and early literacy skills. Children are encouraged to retell stories, create their own narratives and express ideas through play and talk.
Storytelling also supports children’s emotional well being, helping them to explore feelings, build empathy and make sense of the world around them.
